It’s a hard day for DCEU fans. Variety reports that both New Gods and The Trench, two upcoming films in the DC line-up have been canceled.
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros. and DC said in a statement. “We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.”
New Gods was set to be directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Tom King would have followed the weird and wonderful mythology developed by Jack Kirby. The Trench was set to follow the monsters from Aquaman in a vague horror-esque plot from James Wan. DuVernay posted the following statement to Twitter:
Tom, I loved writing NEW GODS with you. I’m upset that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way. Diving into Kirby’s Fourth World was the adventure of a lifetime. That can’t be taken away. Thank you for your friendship. And remember… #DarkseidIs pic.twitter.com/XyyIjcB8Wv

Many have speculated that the reason these projects were cut was because of their ties to Justice League. Even though the Snyder Cut released on HBO Max created some more buzz around that part of the DCEU, it may not have been enough to convince Warner Bros. to move forward with any Justice League-adjacent plans.
