I’m a sucker for romances and this one had a bit of an odd premise but I thought it would be something to pique my interests. I try to check out at least one romance show per season in order to get my fill and after seeing what Hige wo Suru. Shoshite Joshikousei wo Hirou. Had to offer in terms of a synopsis, I added it to my list and gave it a shot! Will this one end up in my collection of romance shows as a fond memory or will this one end up on my drop pile?
Let’s Go!
First Episode Synopsis
Yoshida is on a date with a girl name Airi Gotou. Things seem to be going well for the two of them. She really enjoyed the dinner at the restaurant he took her to and the vibes seem to be connecting. In a bold move, Yoshida asks Airi back to his place where she drops the bomb on him that she already has a boyfriend.
What?
Angry and now drunk, Yoshida stumbles home to find a teenage girl sitting on the ground beneath a street light. He tells her to go home but the last train is already gone. She asks to stay at his place and will even pay him with sex if he lets her.
What!?
For whatever reason, Yoshida (despite not being interested in her sexually), agrees to let her spend the night. The next morning, his alcohol wears off and he can’t remember most of what happened the night before. The girl, whose name is Sayu Ogiwara, ran away from home and has nowhere to go. Despite it being a giant pain in the ass for him, Yoshida says that she can stay there until she decides to grow up and go back to her parents. In exchange, she will have to do all of the chores around the apartment.
And thus begins our series.
Worth Watching?
YES – I, honestly, didn’t know what to make of the premise of the show. It’s kind of sad that Sayu paid with her body just to get a place to sleep for the night. She figured that Yoshida would be just like everyone else and she’d get a room in exchange for a few cheap thrills; however, she soon discovered that he’s not like other men. Despite his rough exterior and direct language, Yoshida does have a bit of a heart.
In fact, as early as the very first episode, you can start to see some of the positives of having someone like Sayu hanging around at home. His coworkers even took notice of the positive and upbeat change in Yoshida. All of this is beginning to make him wonder certain things (well, it is a romance series so… it’s not hard to guess what those “things” are).
While the first episode didn’t really do much, it established our two main characters, gave a believable backstory for the two of them, set up the premise, and established the world in which these two live in. Everything that a good first episode should do. Typically, a show like this will put forth a great effort in the first episode and then fall off until it builds up for its big finale. We’ll have to see if this is the case here but, so far, the story is pretty interesting and it’s kind of a different take on romance. I really want to see where this one goes!
