We Wish We Knew, But Netflix Isn’t Saying.
While Netflix was successful with the Witcher’s first season, it has only made viewers and gamers alike hungry for the second season. As such, we’ve seen many asking, “When will we see The Witcher Season 2?” A question that we don’t have an exact answer to, but we’ll do our best to provide some context.
Netflix has already stated that they are already working with The Witcher Season 2 and will arrive on the service sometime in 2021. When in 2021 is anyone’s guess, but we’re guessing we’ll see it sometime in Q3 of the year. Of course, the filming has hit several delays along the way. First, Henry Cavill, a fellow PC gamer, suffered an injury on the set and sidelined him while he recovered. Then he went and injured himself again, this time while going for a jog back in January 2021.
We also have to keep in mind that COVID-19 has delayed production for most studios, and The Witcher is no exception. Netflix stopped production of the show due to multiple positive cases of COVID-19, back during November 2020. This would be the second time the filming was affected, as this also happened during March 2020, due to Kristofer Hivju, who plays Nivellen, revealing he tested positive for COVID-19. As you can see, there have been several hindrances, but filming is still underway.
What Can We Expect in Season 2?
Sadly, we don’t know when The Witcher Season 2 will start. We do know that the main cast, consisting of Geralt (Henry Cavill), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allen), will return. As will Joey Batey (Jaskier), MyAnna Buring (Tissaia), Tom Canton (Filavandrel), Lilly Cooper (Murta), Jeremy Crawford (Yarpin Zigrin), Mahesh Jadu (Vilgefortz), Eamon Farren (Cahir), Terence Maynard (Artorius), Lars Mikkelsen (Stregobor), Royce Pierreson (Istredd), Mimi Ndiweni (Fringilla Vigo), Wilson Radjou-Pujalte (Dara), Anna Shaffer (Triss Merigold), and Therica Wilson-Read (Sabrina).
In addition to returning characters, it was revealed that we’d see more of Geralt’s backstory, and we’ll finally get to meet his family. His Witcher family, those who raised him to become the man he is. This means we’ll get to see Vesemir, who is pretty much the closest thing Geralt has to a father figure. That should be interesting, as becoming a Witcher involves a lot of tough love.
As someone who played all the games and read the first book, my mind is all over the place. But seeing how Netflix wants to keep things simple this time likely, I imagine we’ll see the following; Geralt training Ciri and finding Yennefer. At least at the start of the new season. At the end of the first season, Geralt and Ciri are finally reunited. While during the battle of Nilfgaard, Yennefer does her best, but after using up all of her power but forcing a retreat, she seemingly disappears. We have no idea what happened to her, but that will likely be explained next season. I’m speculating that she teleported, as we’ve already seen she has this ability. In all likelihood, she spent up most of her strength forcing the retreat and either teleported somewhere safe or wanted people to believe she was dead.
The Witcher Season 2 will have eight episodes, but we don’t know how long the episodes will be. We also got a lot at a few of the main characters, thanks to a tweet from Netflix back in December 2020.
