Skullgirls 2nd Encore is alive and well and is set to receive a season pass. The very first season pass for the title, as it takes cues from other fighting titles and a new character.
First up is Annie, a previously shown character for Skullgirls 2nd Encore and currently available in Skullgirls Mobile. She’ll be made available via early access on Steam this March 2021. Developer Hidden Variable and Autumn Games will continue to provide needed balancing for Annie until she feels just right. After which, Annie will see a final release on PC (Steam) and PS4, in May 2021, along with a story mode.
Annie and the season pass will eventually make their way to the Switch, but due to technical complications, a release date has not been announced. There are currently no plans to be Skullgirls to the Xbox platform at this time. Crossplay, a topic on everyone’s minds, is being explored, but there aren’t any immediate plans to add the feature.
Then there’s the season pass slated for a March 2021 release date on PC (Steam) and will include four new characters (Annie included), an exclusive palette pack, a digital soundtrack, and a digital art compendium.
The season pass is priced at $29.99 as a promo but will eventually move up to $34.99. Annie and the other DLC/season pass characters can also be acquired for $9.99 each.
Hidden Variable and Autumn Games have stated that season pass characters will also include new stage/music, palettes, and a full story mode. And while the new characters are listed as “TBA”, they have already been chosen. They aren’t listed because the developer wants to involve whoever purchases the season and allows them to influence the release order. Likely this will be done via a voting system.
It wasn’t too long ago that disaster struck Lab Zero Games, which resulted in the entire either departing or being removed from the company due to a toxic work environment. This ultimately resulted in both Hidden Variable and Autumn Games severing ties with the Lab Zero Games. This left many wondering about the status of Skullgirls. Thankfully it appears that Skullgirls is alive and well, with the continued development of the game being handled by Hidden Variable and Autumn Games. So far, the newly created studio comprised of former Lab Zero Games employees, Future Club, is not working on any part of Skullgirls that we know of.
Damn good to see that Skullgirls is alive and kicking while plenty of content is still being worked on. While I haven’t played the game in a while, I’m looking forward to seeing how the DLC shapes up. And Annie, because she looks interesting.
