According to PlayStation’s Jim Ryan, the next entry in Polyphony’s Gran Turismo series has been delayed until 2022. In a recent interview with GQ, Ryan states that Gran Turismo 7 has been delayed due to the impact of COVID-19, which has presented production challenges.
GT7 has been impacted by Covid-related production challenges and therefore will shift from 2021 to 2022. With the ongoing pandemic, it’s a dynamic and changing situation and some critical aspects of game production have been slowed over the past several months. We’ll share more specifics on GT7’s release date when available.
To be fair, that’s underselling. Polyphony Digital has been placed into a new and bizarre situation that many development studios have found themselves in. Thanks to COVID-19, the world was forced to adapt, all of which has changed the way we live and work. As I’d imagine, larger development studios are used to working in an environment where they come into an office or facility. Now with COVID, many are developing out of their homes or off-site locations, which definitely adds a layer of complexity, not to mention stress.
Delaying the game is the right call, and as we all know about Polyphony Digital, they are a studio that’s all about quality. They’ll be done when the game is ready and not before.
Gran Turismo 7 was officially announced for the PlayStation 5 during the PlayStation showcase that was held on June 11th, 2020. While no release date was provided, many were hopeful that the game would see a 2021 release date. I can safely say that being a fan of Gran Turismo since the first game, I did not expect a 2021 release, and 202 was more along the lines of what I thought the game would be released.
