On Wednesday, January 20, a Russian court in St. Petersburg banned Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, and Inuyashiki from airing in their country. They cited the reasons being that they were afraid that teenagers would watch these shows and attempt to mimic the violence contained within them.
After watching portions of episodes from the banned series, the courts determined that every episode they watched contained some form of cruelty, murder, and/or violence.
These decisions stemmed from a 2020 December lawsuit that was filed against 49 Russian sites that were distributing anime series. There are still some lawsuits pending in the courts which could end up banning additional shows such as Elfen Leid and Naruto.
