Earlier today, we finally get our first look at the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie, that’s to a super sweet trailer. We talked about that in this article. However, being the old-school Godzilla fan and being the guy who grew up with Godzilla, I must have watched this trailer at least 20x times. Mainly in hopes of finding something that I missed, those hidden Easter Eggs. And I think I found one.
Now, we all swear that we see MechaGodzilla at the beginning of the trailer. That one is a given, and it does look like him. But I’m not here to talk about him. I’m here to talk about the one monster that had about a 1-second cameo that NO ONE is talking about. Who am I referring to? None other than Gamera.
Wait, he’s not in the trailer? Sure he is; he’s just not shown for very long. If you watch the trailer and stop at the 1:55 mark, you’ll see a smallish object with blue streaks shooting out of its rear in the upper left corner of the screen.
See the screenshot below.
That totally looks like Gamera, at least to me. It looks just like a giant turtle in flight; you can’t tell me otherwise. When Gamera takes flight, he tucks in his rear limbs, and blue streaks shoot from behind him. Traditionally the streams shoot out diagonally, but this is a new movie, and there are bound to be a few changes here and there.
For comparison, here’s an image from Super Monster Gamera.
Who is Gamera?
A giant, fire-breathing turtle that was mutated by nuclear weapons and was created to be a direct competitor to Godzilla from a rival studio, Daiei Film. Or in other terms, Gamera was a rip-off of Godzilla but became as popular as the Godzilla series. With some noticeable differences, he can fly, and he uses strategies such as using terrain or analyzing his opponents. Even Gamera’s story is similar; bad buy, who was misunderstood, saves a child and is now the protector of children/earth and guardian of the universe.
Adding to the possibility of it being Gamera, a while back, there was talk of Gamera getting a movie, back in 2014 and 2015. There was even a concept trailer shown at the 2015 New York Comic-Con. After that, nothing was ever shown or said again. It could be that this movie ended up being scrapped, or perhaps they thought it would be best to toss the reboot of Gamera into Godzilla vs. Kong instead. And if it’s the latter, it would definitely make sense while we’re seeing Gamera in the trailer, even for a few seconds.
For those who haven’t see that trailer, I’ve provided that below for your viewing pleasure.

Obviously, we won’t know more until either a new trailer is released or maybe not until the movie finally gets released. Or how the two rival studios, Daiei and Toho, worked this out and having Gamera included if it is him. Come back when the movie is released to tell me I was wrong, but if I’m right, well, still come back.
