The Story
The third volume of Spy x Family continues Yuri’s visit to Twilight and Yor’s apartment where he wants to question their marriage. Yuri doesn’t approve of it at all and decides to interrogate Twilight about it… while drunk! It ends up being a rather interesting confrontation but the secret is safe… for now. However, despite this, Twilight begins to get some suspicions about Yor and carries out an investigation of his own to make sure that Yor wasn’t some sort of set up/gateway for Yuri to come in and discover his identity.
Once that matter is settled, we are taken back to Eden academy where Anya is still trying to earn her Stella Stars. We start off with a game of dodgeball where we are introduced to a character named Bill Watkins who looks like he’s 40 years old but he’s actually 6!! (WHAT!?). Needless to say, it doesn’t end well for Anya (in more ways than one but they were all hilarious!)
With Anya not getting a star in Physical Education and her test scores lower than an infant’s I.Q., they need some other way in order to get Anya to the required eight stars for Twilight’s mission. They know that an uncanny way to earn them is through community service so Twilight beings Anya to a hospital to volunteer. It doesn’t exactly go well and they are dismissed from their service! As they are leaving, a boy comes in for physical therapy and falls into the pool. Anya’s mind-reading comes in handy as she hears the boy drowning and takes off to save him. That merit alone earns her a Stella Star!
Seven to go!
Anya heads back to school and shows off her star which draws Damian’s ire. Anya dreams up a scenario where she gets a dog and Damian taunts her about how his dog is cuter. So, when she showed up with Twilight to have a face-off with Damian’s dog, Twilight kindly asks for Desmond to stop the war and saves the world! This delusion prompts Anya to ask Twilight for a dog to which he obliges. He goes to pick out a dog and there is one particular one that seems to have a vision of Anya, Twilight, and Yor in its mind. Creepy stuff but we’ll find out what it means next time as that’s where the volume ends.
Characters
Yuri had the most attention as far as development goes in this volume. We learned just how much Yor means to him and how she was always there for him growing up. Yuri swore that he would protect her no matter how much which is why he doesn’t approve of her “marriage.” Yuri is also a lightweight drinker and got drunk very quickly when he visited Yor and Twilight. Outside of that and the suspicions raised when he gave a textbook story that Twilight recognized, Yuri seems like an out-of-control, over-protective bother… but in a hilarious way. Then again, with a series such as this, I didn’t really expect him to be taken too seriously!
Everyone was pretty much the same. Anya still had the best reactions whenever she read people’s thoughts, Twilight is still the careful thinker, and Yor is still the shaken, not stirred, assassin. I guess the only development here would be with Anya earning her star and wanting to be referred to as Starlight Anya from now on. She did get a little full of herself but outside of that, no major changes for anyone.
Although, it should be pointed out that the seeds have been planted for the eventual Yor x Twilight love story. You can just tell that they will actually fall for each other at some point and become a real couple. That might actually serve as part of the ending of the series. We’ll have to see about that!
Final Thoughts
Spy x Family has kept its foot on the gas for three straight volumes now! This series just keeps getting better and better each and every time! The story plot hasn’t changed but all of the little details that do change with each volume keep it fresh and interesting! In addition, the characters are the stars of this show… especially Anya. I can’t get enough of her as she really pulls everything together so well!
I feel like a broken record with this series but I am really enjoying it and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite manga of recent times! Can’t wait to see what’s up with the dog in the next volume and to see if Anya will continue to earn more stars through community service!
Also… Anya does have a plan to improve her grades. I can’t see it going well but it should be hilarious!
