With a host of films originated slated for this coming year pushed back to 2022, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that another Indiana Jones movie is still in the works. But Disney confirmed the news at a recent investor meeting, and assured everyone that Harrison Ford will return in the role.
Steven Spielberg, the director of the existing Indiana Jones films, confirmed the fifth film all the way back in 2018. Since then the movie has gone through a bit of development hell, as the film was pushed back to 2020 from 2019. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, the film is set to release in 2022. Notably, Spielberg exited the director’s chair for the first time in the history of the franchise, handing the reigns to James Mangold. This also would have contributed to a production delay, likely pushing the film from 2021 to 2022.
Mangold has previously directed Logan and Ford V Ferrari, so he’s no stranger to gritty and faced-paced films. Spielberg will stay on as producer, allowing Mangold to take over the franchise and handing it over to a new generation of filmmakers. The first film in the franchise, Raiders of the Lost Ark, debuted in 1981. Clearly, Indiana Jones is not ready to hand in his fedora just yet.
