Fortnite on Xbox Series X and PS5 will see huge visual improvements

Fortnite: Epic Games

Not so much on the Xbox Series S

In May 2002, Epic Games announced that they had plans to bring Fortnite over to the next generation of gaming consoles; the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Today, the company has provided what we can expect to see on both consoles when they’re finally released.

Fortnite players who happen to pick up the PS5 or Xbox Series X will see many enhancements in both framerate and resolution. Both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will see 60 frames per second at 4K, along with improved visuals and physics. These new visuals include a dynamic and interactive world with grass and trees responding to explosions, enhanced fluid simulations for smoke and liquid (cooler-looking smoke and liquid effects), and all-new Storm and cloud effects.

In addition to the visual upgrades, both consoles will also feature split-screen gameplay at 60FPS. Thanks to the included SSDs built into both the PS5 and Xbox Series X; they’ll also allow gamers to get into matches much quicker. According to Epic Games, specific to the PS5 is haptic feedback, which will provide a layer of immersion.

While the PS5 and Xbox Series X are seeing several enhancements, the Xbox Series S appears to be left out. Instead of supporting 1440p, which is the console’s targetted resolution, it will instead offer 1080p@60 frames per second. And while it will see some of the visual upgrades, Epic isn’t saying exactly which. Either way, the Xbox Series S version of Fortnite will pale compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Mind you, these upgraded versions of Fortnite will still be based on Unreal Engine 4, not Unreal Engine 5. While Epic Games did mention that Fortnite will move to their newest game engine, Unreal Engine 5 is still in development and won’t be ready until sometime in 2021.

Fortnite’s next-generation upgrade for the consoles will be released on November 1oth for Xbox Series X|S and November 12th for PlayStation 5.
