The Story
Fly Me to the Moon Vol. 2 is broken up into three different mini-arcs… all of which were absolutely hilarious, cute, and just overall amazing!
The first arc centers around Nasa and Tsukasa heading to the bathhouse in order to wash up. There, we meet two brand-new characters in Kaname and Aya. Kaname is one of Nasa’s friends and is about as perverted and shameless as they come! Aya is Kaname’s older sister; however, she’s a bit more reserved and cautious around people but that leads to her becoming a bit nervous and outspoken… such as when she tried to describe Tsukasa’s smooth skin by saying it was like an iPhone X!
The second arc deals with meeting Tsukasa’s sister Chitose. We finally learn a LOT about Tsukasa here and where she came from. We still don’t know why she left her grandmother’s home but it’s obvious that Chitose wants her back. Chitose discovers that Tsukasa got married to Nasa and disapproves of it so much she does the only rational thing: she kidnaps Nasa! While trapped in Tsukasa’s former home, Nasa discovers a moon rock and while it’s so important to Tsukasa. Tsukasa eventually shows up and busts Nasa out of there by escaping through a secret passage that leads to an old, abandoned church where a really cute scene plays out!
The final arc is learning about Tsukasa is a geek culture nerd and she wants to watch movies with Nasa… problem is… they don’t have a TV or a disc player. They end up buying some cheap and used discount models but it’s time to go rent some movies! At the rental store, Nasa runs into Kaname who is renting some hentai and has zero problems admitting it (I’m really starting to fall in love with Kaname!). She gives her smut film to Nasa thinking he wants to spice up the action by making Tsukasa watch it in order to get her motor revved up. Nasa, of course, doesn’t and goes to put it back. When he emerges from the adult section, he is discovered by Aya who was watching from the shadows!
On the way back, Nasa has to go to work and Tsukasa looks sad. He thinks that maybe getting her an engagement ring would cheer her up. Of course, he confuses that for wedding rings but thankfully Tsukasa was there to stop him from dropping millions of yen! Still, Nasa’s determination is second-to-none and absolutely adorable!
Lots of stuff happened in this volume that just piled greatness on top of more greatness! While the chapters do feel episodic still, they are tying one episode into another so it does feel like there is a natural progression to things. Everything story-wise in this volume keeps you engaged and turning the pages. I was surprised how fast I blew through this volume as it held my attention that much!
Characters
We’ve got quite a few new characters to talk about here… all of which are pretty amazing in their own right!
First up is Kaname. As I said before, she’s just a huge shameless hentai-loving girl who likes to tease the heck out of Nasa… including making fun of the size of a certain male appendage he possesses. One would say that Kaname is a little TOO comfortable around Nasa, though. Oddly enough, Kaname was under the impression that after a few years, she would have gotten to date and/or marry Nasa so it came as a massive blow to her when Nasa got married out of the blue. Still, that doesn’t deter her from teasing the ever-living crap out of him! Whenever Kaname is in the spotlight, amazing times are had! I’ve only just met her but she’s fast becoming my favorite character in this series!
Then there is Aya who is the opposite of Kaname. Aya seems shy but that shyness makes her nervous and then she goes on these long rants… rants where she sometimes says the goofiest stuff which causes her to find something else to say that’s less goofy but ends up saying something even goofier. She’s pretty straightforward, yet, complex at the same time. It’s definitely an odd balance but it’s one that works and works well for her character! She’s not as exciting to read as Kaname, though, but she does bring entertainment whenever she’s around.
Chitose is Tsukasa’s sister. Chitose is tsundere to the max. That’s pretty much it! The only major difference here is that Chitose is simply just mean to Nasa without actually loving him… or even liking him. She simply just doesn’t want her sister to be married to anyone and she feels that Nasa is preventing her from coming back home… despite Tsukasa saying that she has no desire town of her own volition. We also learn she’s a major geek culture nerd just like Tsukasa!
We are then introduced to Chitose’s two maids: Charlotte and Aurora. Charlotte is a combat maid that goes WAY over the top when it comes to her actions. She’s easily excitable, brash, yet… happy? That’s a weird combination but it can best be described that she’s a bit on the dumb side. If you tell her to capture someone, she’ll be happy to oblige but not in a sadistic way. It’s like hunting people down and trying to smash them brings her pure joy. Aurora, on the other hand, is kind of like the voice of reason that keeps Chitose in check… otherwise, the world might just be doomed!
Final Thoughts
I’ve read a lot of romantic series over the years that I’ve enjoyed from So Cute it Hurts, to Ao Haru Rise, Love Me, Love Me Not, QQ Sweeper/Queen’s Quality, and everything in between. Each one of those series had a hook that reeled you in and made them great but, after only two volumes of Fly Me to the Moon, there is just something about this series that makes it stand out above any others I’ve read so far. It just seems to do a lot of things right and it does them in such a way that breaks the normal mold that you see from other typical romances or romcoms. I think it’s too early to say whether or not this will become my favorite series as we still have a long way to go but if it keeps doing what it is doing and maintains its quality throughout, I might just consider it.
No series has made me feel that way just after two volumes. That says something. If you haven’t read this series yet… I suggest you dig in. if reading’s not your thing… go watch the anime since it’s currently airing (under the name Tonikaku Kawaii or TONIKAWA: Fly Me to the Moon or TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You. WHY DOES THIS HAVE SO MANY NAMES!?) !
