It was announced today that the UK counterpart to popular geek culture media site Kotaku is closing down. A statement on the site was released which informed visitors that Kotaku’s parent company, Future Publishing, was ceasing operation of the UK branch.
The UK site launched back in September 2014 after it had acquired the licensing rights to do so from Gawker Media. The deal was opted by Future Publishing to not renew and, therefore, it will expire on Wednesday, September 9.
As of now, there is no information on why the deal had not been renewed.
G/O Media will reassume the rights after September 9. There’s currently no word if the US-based branch of Kotaku will absorb any of the UK talented.
No matter how you look at this, people are losing their jobs and that’s never a good thing. Here’s to hoping that those who find themselves without a job are picked up by another outlet or find suitable income elsewhere.
