Disney+ has been adding shows to its roster left and right, many with characters we haven’t seen in live action yet. Earlier this month, Disney announced they had cast Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a.k.a She-Hulk, for She-Hulk. Now, we have word that they have chosen Iman Vellani to play the title character in the upcoming show Ms. Marvel.
According to Deadline, Vellani has been cast as Kamala Khan, the newest incarnation of Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan a Pakistani-American teen from New Jersey who gains powers after being exposed to a strange gas and donning the title of Ms. Marvel, who is her favorite superhero. She can grow her limbs and stretch them as needed, and she is a massive nerd for all things super. The character was the first Muslim character to get her own solo series back in 2014, and she will be the first Muslim hero on-screen for Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has also said Kamala Khan will be making appearances in the MCU movies.
This will be Vellani’s first role, which means the studio was more concerned with casting someone who was right for the part rather than bringing in someone well-known. A smart move, given that this version of Ms. Marvel was not only well-received by critics, but also loved by fans. It’ll be great to see this heroine in action, though who knows when that will be thanks to COVID-19.
Additionally, we learned that not only is Nick Fury getting his own TV show, Samuel L. Jackson will be coming back to reprise the role he made so iconic. It’s definitely been a good week for Marvel news.
