With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on the horizon, and with the arrival of Xbox’s Smart Delivery that allows gamers to upgrade to next-generation versions of several existing titles, we’ve seen more publishers either getting onboard or offering a similar approach. This time around it’s Bethesda who has recently announced that they’ll provide free PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrades for both Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online.
Players who own or purchase either title on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade for free to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions, respectively, when those versions are available. Additionally, our teams are working hard to ensure both titles will support backwards compatibility when the new consoles launch. We’ll have more information to share in the coming weeks and months about The Elder Scrolls Online and DOOM Eternal on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 including expected release windows and a list of enhancements. And while we don’t have any news to share just yet on our remaining catalogue of titles, we can confirm we are committed to offer free upgrades for current generation console owners of existing Bethesda titles we bring forward into the next generation of consoles.
That’s two of the publisher’s biggest titles that have been released over the past several years. Also, they did go on to mention that while they didn’t name drop any other games, they are committed to offering free upgrades for their current generation of games. Meaning, while they didn’t mention Fallout 76, Wolfenstein, or Prey, we can expect to see those making the jump as well. We’ll know more during Bethesda’s “Quakecon At Home” event that will take place from August 7th through August 9th, 2020.
As for offering the free upgrades, that’s one way to get on everyone’s good side, especially with Elder Scrolls Online. While may have already put DOOM Eternal down, Elder Scrolls Online is an MMO and people will be playing (and paying) that game for the foreseeable future.
