‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Trailer Shows the Unglamorous Side of Space Travel

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJuly 12, 2020

We’ve known that one of Star Treks newest shows, Star Trek: Lower Decks, was going to be an animated comedy. However, given that the creator Mike McMahan’s other works (Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites), I don’t think many people knew just how dark the humor was going to get. After all, Star Trek has always been more of a family-friendly franchise (with an exception or two). But now, with the first season’s trailer, we get a much better idea on just want kind of show we’re in for:

So it is clear there’s going to be a few gross-out jokes, some bloody and pulpy humor, and some sex jokes, but no cursing or over-the-top violence. It also looks like we’ll be getting a good look at the bridge crew of the U.S.S Cerritos and, of course, the lower deck crew. It looks like the series will be more episodic versus having an overall arc. It likely takes place around Next Generation cause we see The Borg, though Trekkies more studious than I might be able to tell through details on the ship.

Overall, this looks like a show that’ll expand on Star Trek’s brand of humor, and give new fans a different way to experience the universe. Is it tacky to say “set phasers to fun”? Ah, well, let’s do it anyways. Set phasers to fun!

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres on CBS All Access on August 6, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
