Throughout Destiny 2’s life span, many have wondered if and when Bungie would drop the game and focus on the next chapter; Destiny 3. However, thanks to Bungie’s June 9th Destiny 2 Livestream, it’s been confirmed that Destiny 3 isn’t on the table.
During the stream, Luke Smith, game director for Destiny 2, stated that the company wants to take Destiny in a different direction. Away from numbered entries and that the game will evolve over time, similar to an MMO. Afterward, Luke then spoke with Destiny 2 Twitch Streamer, DrLupo, where he reiterated the same thing.

There you have it, no Destiny 3 is in the cards. Of course, Bungie has already laid out the upcoming expansions for the next two years with Destiny 2: Beyond Light that releases in September 2020, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen in 2021, and Destiny 2: Lightfall in 2022.
Speaking of Destiny 2: Lightfall in 2022, Bungie has confirmed that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will be free upgrades from the PS4 and Xbox One versions. The next-gen consoles will support 4K 60FPS as well.
With all that being said, you have to wonder when Bungie will eventually rebrand Destiny 2 to just Destiny. Most will remember that Bungie’s original plan for the series was to make it a vast and evolving MMO-ish adventure. That is until Activision started seeing dollar in their eyes.
With Bungie no longer attached to the publisher, they’ve been slowly course-correcting the direction of the game. With the announcement of these new expansions and confirmation that there will not be a Destiny 2, it’s safe to assume they will rebrand the title at some point. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if and when that happens.
As for the confirmation of Destiny 3 not being a thing, who’s to say that in a couple of years that the decision might change. For right now, you can stop worrying about losing all your gear and characters again, unlike when Destiny 1 gave way to Destiny 2.
Currently, Season of the Arrivals is currently live or Destiny 2, on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. With Destiny 2: Beyond Light that releasing in September 2020. As a fan of the series, I’m not going to say that Destiny 2 has been a smooth ride, but I am eager to see how Bungie’s plan is going to fall into place.
