There are positive signs in both Asia and Europe that the pandemic might be slowing down, but that’s not stopping studios from playing it safe with their box office bets. As we’ve reported before, many companies have moved their big releases. Warner Bros. already made some shifts in their schedule, but now appear to be shuffling their dates once again.
Several movies set to premiere in 2021 have been shifted. The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the titular caped crusader, has been moved from June 25, 2021 to October 1, 2021, citing production delays. In the same vein, Shazam! 2 is being delayed from April 1, 2022, to November 4, 2022. Weirdly enough, The Flash is actually getting moved up a month, now premiering on June 3, 2022.
In non-superhero films, the Sopranos sequel, The Many Saints of Newark, has been moved from September 25, 2020, to March 12, 2021. King Richard, a movie starring Will Smith based on the life of the father of tennis champs Venus and Serena Williams, got pushed back a full year to November 19, 2021. Perhaps hedging its bets for Oscar gold next year, the studio also moved their unnamed Elvis movie up a month to November 5, 2021.
There are two movies on the roster that have not budged. One is the Christopher Nolan thriller Tenet, which is still scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 17, 2020. The other is Wonder Woman 1984, which was rescheduled once but is sticking to its August 14, 2020 date.
