If you’re anything like me, then magical girls are your jam! Tokyo Mew Mew came late in the game for those of us growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s, but it has a special place in the history of the genre all the same. And now, a whole new generation of fans will get to experience it as well, with a new anime adaptation coming called Tokyo Mew Mew New.
The new anime will follow the original plot line of the manga created by Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi, which follows five young girls who derive their powers from animal DNA. It’s got transformation sequences, romance subplots, and fights against monsters of the week — your typical magical girl fare. The new show will also mark the 20th anniversary of the manga, and the 65th anniversary of Nakayoshi magazine, where the series was first published.
The show is still in casting, as there is a contest on the audition app mysta to find someone for the role of the protagonist Ichigo Momomiya (the pink cat girl). One of the original creators, Ikumi, posted an illustrated comment that she was surprised her old work was being remade, and urging the anime team to do their best with the new show.
No word yet as to when Tokyo Mew Mew New will air, but it will likely be out sometime in late 2020.
