Is the Xbox Series X as massive as everyone thinks it is?

Now that the Xbox Series X has officially been revealed, the console has been on the receiving end of an ongoing meme. One that pokes fun at the size of the console, and one I’m sure you’ve already seen. So far I’ve seen one that depicts a refrigerator, a monolith, and a few others. But those memes got me thinking about the actual size of the console.

Is it as big as everyone is making out to be?

Of course, no one other than those who work at Microsoft and possibly a few influencers have any legit data on the console. However, the images that Microsoft has been showing off with the updated Xbox wireless gives us some information to work with.

Just how big is this thing?

As I mentioned previously, the Xbox wireless controller gives us an idea of the size of the console. That controller is about the same size as the current Xbox One controllers, or possibly a bit smaller. We’ll go with the same size for this exercise.

The width of an Xbox One controller is 6 inches (give a or take a 1/4) across and 4.5 inches long. Using a bit of estimation based on the height of the controller, we can assume that the Xbox Series X is about 13.5 inches or  34.29 centimeters. With this, we can determine that the width of the console is about the same size as Xbox One controller, 6.5  to 7 inches.

With my guesstimation figures in our hands, that gives us an idea of what to expect. Yes, the Xbox Series X is the largest console to sit next to or under our TVs (or entertainment setups). Double the size of the Xbox One, Xbox S and Xbox One X, but it’s far from the meme’s that it has been featured in.

Why is the Xbox Series X so big?

Well, you know what they said, right? The bigger it is the better the airflow. While the Xbox One X had some impressive cooling technology inside of it, the Xbox Series X is going to double the amount of heat that will be produced. Heat, which is never good for any electronic component. I’m sure you’ve placed your hand on the back of a PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X? They’re pretty toasty, and thanks to that they tend to get loud. Painful evident for the PlayStation 4 Pro.

This is where the size comes in. If the case has more space, the airflow can be maximized (if done right). By directing or channeling the heat away from components that need to be cooled, cooling the console can be more efficient. Again, if done correctly. Of course, I could be completely off-base here in regards to the dimensions of the Xbox Series X. But I’d like to think so of what I’ve stated holds. We’ll find out more during E3 2020, or at least I hope so.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X releases Holiday 2020, with no current announced price tag attached.
