To say that Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a hit game is an understatement. To say that Super Smash Bros as a franchise is popular is the understatement of the century. But now, thanks to Nintendo’s recent financial briefing and some detective work by the people at Dexerto and more, we can now say that Ultimate is the best-selling fighting game ever made, AND that Smash Bros as a franchise is the best-selling fighting game franchise in history.
To break it down, Ultimate at the time of the end of September 2019, has sold 15.71 million units. That means it beats Street Fighter II’s 15.5 million that it sold in its lifetime. So that’s already pretty impressive. But, when you add in all the Smash Bros games, led by Ultimate, you get an astounding 53.03 million units sold across the original, Melee, Brawl, Wii U and 3DS versions, and of course, Ultimate.
This is of course a HUGE win for Nintendo in many ways, not the least of which is that many people fail to see Super Smash Bros as a legitimate fighting game franchise, but clearly people are playing it more than Tekken, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, King of Fighters and more.
So drink it in Nintendo fans! That’s…GAME!
