If you’ve never encountered the Anne of Green Gables franchise, then you are missing out on some prime turn-of-the-century wholesome drama. Not your speed? Well the newest adaptation Anne with an E spices up the narrative a lot. And thankfully, you’ve got just enough time to binge the first two seasons before its final season heads to Netflix.
The actress who plays the titular Anne, Amybeth McNulty, announced that the show’s final season would be coming to Netflix soon on her Instagram:
The show’s third season has already aired in Canada on CBC. There were lots of questions as to whether there would be a season 4, but it looks like our time with Anne is up.
If you’ve never seen the show or read the books, Anne with an E follows Anne, an orphan who is taken in by the Cuthberts, a brother and sister pair living in 1890s Canada. There she learns of friendship, love, and family. As mentioned above, the show deals with more modern topics than the original source material, including LGBTQ issues, mental illness, and the treatments of indigenous peoples and people of color. Some fans don’t like the changes but I think they add a new layer to the story.
I haven’t seen the season yet but dive the cast and crew didn’t know it was the final one, you have to wonder if the conclusion is satisfactory. Here’s hoping that the story gets some closure for our plucky protagonist and all her friends.
Anne with an E Season 3 premieres on Netflix on January 3, 2020.
