Yesterday, Rising Star Games and TOYBOX revealed the sequel to the horror-adventure game Deadly Premonition. Word came via a press release, announcing that Deadly Premonition 2 will arrive on the Nintendo Switch sometime next year. Several of the original collaborators will return, including scriptwriter and director Swery and composer Satoshi Okubo.
The original Deadly Premonition arrived on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February 2010. Loosely inspired by Twin Peaks, the game focuses on an FBI Agent, Francis York Morgan, who investigates the murder of a young woman in a small town in Washington. Featuring intriguing narrative and gameplay elements alongside technical bugs and low quality graphics, it quickly garnered the Guinness World Record for “Most Critically Polarizing Survival Horror Game.” Destructoid reviewed it a 10/10 while IGN gave it a 2/10. Since then the game has built up a cult following, leading to a director’s cut released in 2013.
Like its predecessor, Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise will be an open-world game in which players will investigate a new string of murders in a small American town outside of New Orleans. This time around, the game will start in the present-day in Boston and will switch back and forth between 2005 and the present. Players will also switch between two protagonists, Francis York Morgan from the original game, and FBI Agent Aaliyah Davis. For those who want to play the original, Nintendo announced that it will now be available in the eShop as Deadly Premonition Origins.
Speaking about the announcement of the sequel, Swery had this to say:
“Roughly 10 years have passed since the original was released in 2010. Now, a miracle has happened, and I have a chance to reunite with my best friend – something I never thought would be possible.
I’m working hard day and night while also looking back on the past to make sure this becomes something that doesn’t change no matter how much time passes, while also adapting to and interlocking with the current era – a game that encompasses all. Please get yourself a cup of coffee and wait for it to be completed!”
Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise will release for the Nintendo Switch in 2020. No word yet on other platforms. The original game is currently available on the Nintendo Switch eShop right now. I recently stumbled upon the PS3 director’s cut at a used game shop, so for those of you without a Switch, that may be worth looking into.
