Netflix Announces David Tennant, Hayley Atwell in Cast for ‘Criminal’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 17, 2019

It’s always fun when there’s a new show coming out from Netflix that’s all mysterious. The latest culprit? Criminal, not to be mistaken for the popular podcast of the same name, which will feature 12 different cases across four countries. Netflix has even been so kind as to provide a casting trailer:

As we can see, there are some bing names here, namely David Tennant, fresh off Good Omens, and Hayley Atwell, who played Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We also see Youssef Kerkour from Dracula, and Clare-Hope Ashitey from Doctor Foster making appearances.

Every episode will take place either in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, or Spain, and each case will take place in the language of the area. This also means that there will be actors of those countries and languages, who we also get to see in the teaser. For the U.K., there’s Katherine Kelly, Lee Ingleby and Nicholas Pinnock. Gemany’s episodes will have Eva Meckbach, Sylvester Groth, and Florence Kasumba. France will feature the actors Margot Bancilhon, Laurent Lucas and Stéphane Jobert. Spain’s cases will feature Jorge Bosch, José Ángel Egido and Nuria Mencía.

The showrunners are George Kay and Jim Field Smith, who are prolific in British crime TV shows. The season will have 12 episodes, with three taking place in each country. However, we don’t get much else in terms of plot or theme, if there is one. Still, as a concept it seems like a really cool international effort, and if it does well could span even more countries.

Criminal is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in Fall 2019.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
