While the Nintendo Switch may be in a bit of a 1st party drought right now, we know what’s coming on the horizon, as Super Mario Maker 2 is set to drop on the Switch on June 28th. But, instead of waiting for E3 2019 (which is only 4 weeks away now) to drop details, Nintendo dropped a Nintendo Direct to give us lots of new information!
You can watch the Direct below, but here are the highlights.
1. Loads Of New Items, Themes, Enemies, Etc.
As expected, Super Mario Maker 2 has loads of new content to enjoy. You can expect all the classic elements, including the changing themes and graphic looks. But, you can also expects lots of new items that change the game, and new obstacles in regards to terrain to help change how you think of level creation.
For example, you can now create slopes, use seesaws, create snake blocks, have Banzai Bills that come from a variety of directions, and more! Plus, you can even summon two of the Koopalings to create new challenges for you!
There’s even some brand new never-before-seen items and themes here. Such as the Super Mario 3D World theme, which brings a plethora of new things like the Clear Pipe, Cat Mario and Bowser, blinking blocks, and more.
And for a REALLY special twist, there’s also…the Moon. No, really. There’s a new “Night” theme that can be applied to all levels, and with them, you can place the moon. It’s kind of like the opposite of Angry Sun (who appears in the game at your leisure), because if you touch it, you can wipe out all enemies on screen. As for the Night theme, the level actually changes based on where you are. Such as turning the desert into a sandstorm level, lowering the gravity on another theme, and even turning good mushrooms into poison mushrooms!
As you can see, there’s a lot to love, and loads of new things for you to put to the test. And that’s just scratching the surface of all the new content in the game!
2. Story Mode
A big surprise here is that Super Mario Maker 2 will get a Story Mode! In it, Princess Peach’s castle has been destroyed. To rebuild it, Mario must battle through brand new custom levels in order to collect coins to pay for repairs. There are 100 brand-new Nintendo-made levels for you to enjoy, so consider this a “teaser” for all the wonderful things you can do in this game!
3. Online Multiplayer and Co-Op And Modes
Just like the original game, Super Mario Maker 2 will allow you to upload your courses online, but this time, it’ll happen via a place called “Course World”. In Course World, you’ll not only get to upload your courses, but search for others, do a “Maker Profile” for yourself, and even do some special challenge modes!
First up, there’s “Endless Challenge”, where you’ll be put to the test to see how many custom player-made levels you can beat in a row! If you do well, you’ll get ranked on the global leaderboard!
But, if you would rather play with friends or other players, you can do that! The game has a number of multiplayer modes for you to do. Including battling 3 other players to see who can get to the end of the level first, or, working together to try and complete the level.
You can check out the full details in the Direct below, but it’s clear to us that Super Mario Maker 2 is just bigger than ever, it’s meant for EVERYONE to enjoy.
The game comes out June 28th.
