Fans have been known to employ some interesting tactics when they are displeased. From letters to memes to mean-spirited tweets, they will have their anger heard. Fans of Games of Thrones are doing just that with a new Change.org petition entitled “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.”
The petition is fairly short, stating the following:
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.
This series deserves a final season that makes sense.
Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!
This move has been growing in signatures, reaching over 600,000 in about three days. To put it into perspective, the first episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 was watched by 17 million people. Of course, neither HBO nor the showrunners have made a statements since it’s still pretty small scale.
Still, it’s pretty representative of the overall fan feeling about these last few episodes. Read exactly what happened in Todd’s review of the episode, but episode 4 left a lot of people feeling upset about character development and plot turns. Given that George R.R. Martin has yet to finish writing the series, the writers only have some general guidance to work on and must fill in the rest. And while, no doubt, the entire series will be remade at some point, asking HBO to specifically remake one season is…pretty petty.
More fans may be on board with the petition, however, if Sunday’s episode doesn’t live up to expectations.
