It’s a sad day for Star Wars fans, because a few days before May The 4th (Be With You), we have lost one of the great people behind the films. Peter Mayhew, who portrayed Chewbacca for seven of the 9 Star Wars main films and the Solo film has passed away at the age of 74.
The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away. He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home. pic.twitter.com/YZ5VLyuK0u

While he may not have been known for his voice per se because of Chewbacca speaking in grunts and growls, Peter’s height of 7’3 made him the perfect choice for the tall Wookie. And though he didn’t “speak” in the movies, many of his co-stars knew him as a very sweet and kind man. Including supporting various Star Wars groups and charity foundations. He even setup his own charity to help those in need.
An official memorial service will be held June 29th, but you can be sure that many will have a lot to say at the upcoming Star Wars Celebration.
