The day has finally come, and now we know more about the next Pokemon core titles that are coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year (hopefully)! We will be heading to the Galar Region (inspired by the British Isles actually), we’re going to have very HD graphics (that still match the style of the Pokemon games), and of course, we’re going to have three very special and very unique starters to choose from. And by that, I mean that you CAN choose one of them…but there is only one RIGHT choice…Scorbunny.
Scorbunny, along with Sobble (hear Yanvier’s side) and Grookey (hear Tyler’s traitorous take) were unveiled during today’s Pokemon Nintendo Direct. Each have their strengths and weakness as you’d expect, but the TRUTH is that the fire bunny is the best option, and if you can’t see that, you’re blind…or Tyler. Allow me to explain these truths.
Todd’s Truth #1: Fire Is Fast, So Is A Bunny
If you look at the world of Pokemon, especially in the starters, you’ll see subtle trends that inhabit all of them. But an ironic one is that with the fire-type starters…none of them have been animals that are known to be fast with one exception. Charmander was a Lizard (can be fast, but not THAT fast), Cyndaquil was…a fusion of an echinda a shrew apparently, Torchic was a bird (I don’t need to explain that one), Chimchar was a chimp (need I say more Tyler?) Tepig was a pig (again, no explanation needed), Fennekin was a fox (that’s the exception), and Litten was a cat (can be fast, depends on breed).
So aside from Fennekin, none of the animals that the fire-starters are based on are really fast. But Scorbunny not only breaks that mold, it EMBODIES the speed that a fire can consume things at! Rabbits can reach up to 45 miles per hour at times (making it 14 miles per hour faster than foxes!).
And as shown in the trailer, Scorbunny is wicked fast. So fast in fact that it just touching the ground can set it ablaze because of it’s power and speed.
Todd’s Truth #2 – Rabbits Are Epic
It’s easy to look at rabbits and think of creatures that simply breed and eat, or get eaten by predators better than it. But when you really think about it, rabbits are survivors. They know how to run, they know how to hide, they have really heightened senses via their ears and nose, and sometimes they’ll go to extreme lengths just to eat. And while this may be gross, sometimes rabbit mothers will eat their own young to regain energy to survive.
But let’s step outside of nature and talk about all the great rabbits of history. While Tyler may have disparaged the rabbit name by saying that there are no great rabbits/bunnies outside of Bugs (who is king, as seen above), he’s CLEARLY missed all the great rabbits/bunnies of the world.
Such as…Babs and Buster Bunny (no relation) of Tiny Toon Adventures, one of the greatest cartoon series ever made! Or how about Digimon Season 3 where we got Terriermon AND Lopmon, and anyone who watched the show knows that Terriermon was a boss. Or how about one of the most legendary bunnies ever? THE ENERGIZER BUNNY!!!!
There are all sorts of epic bunnies out there, and while some are indeed cautionary tales, that just makes them more epic. Because they don’t play one side of the spectrum, they play both. And when it comes to epic bunnies, I could name a few more…and keep going, and going and going…
Todd’s Truth #3 – Most Of The Best Starters Are Fire-Types
If we’re being honest here. Most times the Fire-Type and Water-Type Pokemon are the ones who most fans and players battle it out for in terms of “who is cooler” or “more epic”. For my money though, the Fire-Type Pokemon edge them out (it is close though I admit). First off, we have FREAKING CHARIZARD!!! The most famous Pokemon outside of Mewtwo and Pikachu (and some would even say more than that. Typholsion never got the love in the anime, but real Johto fans know how epic he is. Blazken is a boss, and has transcended generations to be one of the favorites in the series.
Infernape was another of Ash’s best Pokemon in the anime series, and had one of the best story arc of all time after Ash raised him when Paul (the jerk rival) dumped him. Emboar is dope, ok? Seriously. He’s a flaming pig that you don’t want to mess with. Delphox is another underated one, but showed that fire can be elegant and beautiful at times. And then…there’s this guy…
When Sakurai was making Super Smash Bros Ultimate, he knew that there had to be a Pokemon rep from Series 7, and did he pick Decidueye or Primarina? NOPE! He went with the fire-type wrestling Pokemon Incineroar, and the world was grateful.
Based on this AMAZING pedigree, it’s clear that Scorbunny is going to have an epic evolution. One that ratchets up the speed factor to 11, and I can’t wait!
Juinichi defined Scorbunny as someone “always running about bursting with energy”. Who wouldn’t want to get behind a Pokemon like that?
Todd’s Truth #4 – The Internet Loves Scorbunny
If you need final proof that Scorbunny is king of the Gen 8 starters, look no further than Twitter, where people have been talking more about Scorbunny than any of the other starters:
I win.
Look, we’re all excited for Pokemon Sword and Shield, especially now that we have the names of the region, games, and the starters. So when it comes out later this year, go and enjoy it…with your Scorbunny.
We have a poll up right now about the starters for Sword and Shield, be sure to vote on it!
