It was reported by Japanese business and financial newspaper Nikkei that Nintendo is planning on releasing a smaller version of the Nintendo Switch. The smaller console could launch early this year, according to the article. The newspaper goes on to state that Nintendo has already held conversations with suppliers and game developers regarding the smaller Switch.
The goal with the smaller Switch is to increase its user base by increasing the portability of the console. This will come at the cost of reducing some of the console’s features but that, in turn, would also reduce the price of the console as well from its current tag of $299.99.
Although they did not get into any specifics, the article also mentioned that Nintendo is looking to strengthen their online service which launched in September of last year. The Nintendo Switch, as previously reported, sold 32.27 million consoles worldwide which still lacks behind the juggernauts of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which had a couple of years worth of a head start. However, in the three-way console battle, Nintendo outsold both Sony and Microsoft in 2018.
