As Cersei Lannister once said, “You either win, or you die.” As Game of Thrones Season 8 nears its arrival, that is a phrase that will likely be on the minds of many fans for a variety of reasons. For this is the season that ends it all. 6 episodes are all that’s left, and each one is said to be a blockbuster that helps change the world of Westeros forever. And now, a quite literally chilling teaser trailer has dropped for the eighth season.
The teaser takes place in Winterfell, with three of the four Stark children (more on that in a bit) going into the crypts of Winterfell, and as they do, passing by statues of key members of their family. Lyanna Stark is seen as Jon walks by, her cry for Ned to protect him from those who would harm him ringing out. Lynna is Jon Snow’s actual mother, and his legacy is that of both house Stark and house Targarean, which makes him the true heir to the Iron Throne. Also, Daenerys is his aunt.
Sansa arrives next, and she passes by the statue of her mother, Catelyn, who laments the horrors that her family has suffered, and also mentions Jon and not being able to love him. Arya is there too, but it’s Jon who passes by Ned Stark’s statue, and watches him for a bit when he says, “You are a Stark. You may not have my name, but you have my blood.”
The Stark children unite only to find themselves looking at statues of themselves, which only happens in Winterfell when the dead are buried. As astute viewers have noted, both Arya and Sansa’s statues look like them. But Jon’s…looks older. Does this imply that death will come for the two leading ladies of House Stark?
As for Bran Stark, the last true-born son of Ned Stark, he’s not there. Many interpret this (due to the “story nature of the teaser”) that this is actually a sort of “vision” of Bran’s as he is the Three-Eyed Raven. This is also teased by the fact that at the end of the teaser, the chill of the White Walkers begins to freeze the crypt.
Many questions await us in Game of Thrones Season 8, but the wait is now only three months away, as it arrives on April 14th.
