The CW has picked up a string of new pilots, according to Deadline. In addition to the upcoming Ruby Rose-led Batwoman at CW, the channel has also greenlit a pilot for The Lost Boys, the 1987 cult horror classic. The Lost Boys is an equally comedic, equally campy, vampire film about two brothers that moved to Santa Carla, California and have no choice but to take down a local gang a vampires. Rob Thomas – writer of the original Veronica Mars and the corresponding Hulu reboot – is set to executive produce the project. The pilot was originally proposed during the 2016/17 television season, but was shelved until now.
A brief synopsis:
Welcome to sunny seaside Santa Carla, home to a beautiful boardwalk, all the cotton candy you can eat…and a secret underworld of vampires. After the sudden death of their father, two brothers move to Santa Carla with their mother, who hopes to start anew in the town where she grew up. But the brothers find themselves drawn deeper and deeper into the seductive world of Santa Carla’s eternally beautiful and youthful undead.
It appears as though The Lost Boys will be a reboot of the original film, and follow many of the same beats of the original plot. It will be interesting to see how the project develops; The CW is a hit-or-miss network with its programming, in my opinion. I am skeptical as to how they will adapt the horror elements to TV and maintain the same level of charm. However, Thomas’ work on Veronica Mars and iZombie has me hopeful that The Lost Boys series will bring something new to the table, and might begin to capture that same magic as the original film.
