Ah, Valve’s Steam Link. A lovely piece of hardware that would let you stream your PC games to your living room via your network, is dead. Despite Valve’s best attempts, the device had a rocky start and never turned into that must-have piece of hardware.
Announced earlier by Valve, the Steam Link is now officially discontinued. Which many of us shouldn’t be surprised as we’ve seen the device being heavy discounted for years. I managed to pick mine up for just $20 dollars. While a colleague was able to snag it for under $5. That’s not to say that the device was a bad one. Quite the contrary, it was a novel idea and when it worked, it worked well. There’s something about being able to play your PC games in your front room without moving your PC. However, the writing was on the wall when Valve released a Steam Link app Android and iOS, which was rejected by Apple. An official app was also made available on select Samsung Smart TVs.
While the device is being discontinued, Valve has stated they will continue to support it. However, good luck if you’re trying to find one in local stores or even on Amazon. I’ve seen them listed for over $100 on there, as a matter of fact. Valve has some on the Steam storefront for $2.50 until November 27, 2018. Funny enough, you’d pay more for shipping than you would for the device.
Still, for a device that does a bang-up job of streaming games locally, I’d jump on the chance to pick one up. You know, before they’re all completely gone.
