If you recall Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, the games were the first to have DLC characters from Nintendo. Those characters would be Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta. Bayonetta was especially interesting, as she was actually voted into the game by fans via a worldwide poll. For Super Smash Bros Ultimate, many fans were curious as to whether this poll would happen again, giving fans another choice of who to add to the roster since “Everyone Is Here!”
Turns out, the answer is no. During the Super Smash Bros Ultimate Nintendo Direct that happened last week, creator Masahiro Sakurai noted that there was going to be a “Fighter Pass” that would bring in 5 new DLC characters (Pirahna Plant is not one of the DLC characters, it’s an addition and “pre-order bonus”). Many speculated that one of those slots would be for the “fan-voted character”. But, on his Twitter, Sakurai noted the following:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s DLC line-up is now complete. This time the selection was made entirely by Nintendo. I decide if we can create a fighter based on their selection, then come up with the plan.
This revelation will no doubt make Smash Bros fans worried, and curious. For if Nintendo made the selections, you have to wonder if they’re going to be all 1st party selections, thus leaving characters like Geno, Banjo-Kazooie and others out of the loop. Or, if Nintendo talked with others like Microsoft and Square Enix to bring those characters into the game.
For those still trying to “influence” things, Sakurai gave this as a response:
It’s great to dream about your favorite character joining the battle and I appreciate your passion, but please try to stay on topic when replying to tweets and refrain from flooding us, and other users, with requests when we’re not specifically asking for feedback. Thank you!
Super Smash Bros Ultimate arrives Nintendo Switch on December 7th.
