Today came the first major casting announcement for the upcoming Witcher Netflix series, which began casting in late June. Henry Cavill is set to play Geralt of Rivia, a genetically modified monster hunter known as a witcher. The Witcher Netflix series will be based off the Polish book series of the same name, written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Cavill keeps busy playing the Man of Steel himself in the DC Universe, but his most recent big-screen appearance was in Mission: Impossible Fallout.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is executive producer and showrunner for the fantasy show, and she has yet to share a definite release date. Since casting has only just begun, I suspect we are a few years away from watching The Witcher. However, we know the show will be 8 episodes upon premier. Sapkowski has written several books, which have previously spawned a movie, graphic novel series, and of course the bestselling video game franchise. That is to say, the writing team will have plenty of source material to work with.
Personally, I’m not too familiar with The Witcher outside the games, but it is exciting to see such a big name attached to this project. It also seems that these folks are taking their time with production, and plan on doing the franchise justice. Keep your eyes peeled for more casting announcements as the project moves along.
