It was announced at this year’s Gamescom event that Shenmue III has received an official launch date of August 27, 2019. We are just one year away from the third story in the Shenmue series! The game was first announced at E3 back in 2015 and was part of a back-to-back bombshell announcement during the Sony press conference where Final Fantasy VII Remake was also announced. The game was also announced to be a Kickstarter project which quickly met its goal soon after it was announced.
A trailer was shown of the game which included the announce date which you can find below:
The trailer features the return of Lan Di, who served as the series’ main antagonist, suggesting that the showdown that the previous two games were building towards may finally take place during the third installment. It is unsure whether or not this will conclude the story; however, as Yu Suzuki stated that in order to finish the story, there will need to be more games beyond Shenmue III. He went on record after the game’s original announcement stating that it would be 11 chapters across two games but as they began development, they realized that they would require more games than that to finish the story.
For the record, Shenmue III is only coming to the PlayStation 4 and PC. There was talk about an Xbox One version, however, since Sony helped with the funding, that idea was scrapped. At least for now.
