It seems the return of the God of War series was incredibly welcome by players. From its release on Friday, April 20 through the first weekend, God of War sold 3.1 million units, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive to date.
Sony Santa Monica studio head Shannon Studstill writes:
I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’s latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.
To understand how impressive these numbers are, Horizon Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million copies in its first two weeks of release, which was quite the feat. And from another established PlayStation franchise, Uncharted 4 sold 2.7 million in its first two weeks. For God of War to surpass both these numbers in only three days is highly impressive, and serves as a testament to fan’s excitement for the series’ return. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the game received high praise from critics as well. These numbers should dispel any doubt that the series will be able to continue with its run in Norse mythology, as both longtime fans and newcomers took to the reimagining of the franchise. Additionally, God of War‘s success should demonstrate that there is still great enthusiasm for triple-A, single-player only games.
