The best things in life aren’t always free
Last week, Sega took to SXSW 2018 and announced that Sonic Mania was getting an upgrade, called Sonic Mania Plus. This upgrade would not only add a new Encore Mode that tosses in several “remixed” stages but also two new playable characters – Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. As well as a 4-player competitive mode.
They also announced that current owners of Sonic Mania would be able to upgrade to Sonic Mania Plus as well. What they didn’t tell us was if the upgrade was free or not. This caused quite a bit of confusion on the internet. So we reached out to our Sega contact to see what the deal was. Turns out that the upgrade won’t be free after all. Not really the answer we were looking for, but at least it’s an answer.
For all gamers who purchased the original digital version of Sonic Mania on console and PC, an Encore DLC pack will be available for sale to access the new features, with more details to come at a later date.
There you have it. The DLC will cost you a few dollars. However, Sega hasn’t nailed down the price as of yet. But if I was a betting man, I’d say we could expect it to come in at $9.99. Seeing how Sonic Mania Plus is releasing this Summer, I don’t think it will be long until we find out the price.
But between me and you and even though I already own Sonic Mania, I want that new physical release. A reversible cover, 32-page artbook, and a holographic package for just $29.99? Definitely a better package, compared to the Sonic Mania CE we got previously. Yeah, I can see myself double-dipping for this.
