When ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ finally and thankfully reached the end, the film hinted at a follow-up. Meaning the third film in the franchise was going to be worked on. Or will it? That’s the question we’re asking now as the producer of ‘Independence Day‘, Dean Devlin, has stated that he has no plans for a third film.
Recently, Dean Devlin was asked at Wondercon 2018, if he had any plans for the 3rd ID4 film. To which he was quoted “I don’t know. I don’t know. Currently, I personally have no plans on doing another one.”. If that doesn’t speak volumes, I don’t know else does.
More than likely, Devlin was less than thrilled about the reception of the 2nd ID4 film. Many fans of the original film thought that the sequel was a sorry attempt to cash in on the series. Others weren’t too happy that Will Smith, the main star of the first film, not only wasn’t in it. But was killed off-camera when he decided to not return. Many critics weren’t too kind to the movie, as seen over at Rotten Tomatoes.
Still, never say never, as Roland Emmerich, the director of ‘Independence Day’ still hasn’t said anything about the 3rd movie. But with Devlin not being 100% sure about the chances of him jumping back into the series, it’s going to be all on Emmerich. That is unless he finds someone else that shares the same aspirations on taking the series into the intergalactic battlefront that the 3rd film was supposed to reach.
Shame, really. I enjoyed the first film, though I never thought that it needed a sequel. I felt it ended just the way it should have.
