In most zombie movies, the name of the game is survival, just making it to the end of the story. However, The Cured is more interested in what happens when society is finally able to pull itself back together.
As we see in the trailer, the film starts at the end of a zombie apocalypse, specifically one of a 28 Days Later rage virus variety. Some zombies, most likely those who were not too far gone, have been given a cure, so that while they are still infected, they can be re-integrated back into society. Things are not going well, however, as some of those cured are still feeling the aggressive zombie inside them. On top of all of that, non-zombie treat those cured extremely poorly, causing some to resent society. Chaos, of course, ensues, as does some zombie violence.
The film stars Ellen Page as Abbie, the sister-in-law of the formerly zombied Senan, played Sam Keeley, and who ends up at the center of the conflict. The story is one of prejudice, fear, and resent, and received middling praise from the critics who saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by relative newcomer David Freyne, The Cured is as much about zombie thrills as it is about social commentary…one hopes, anyways.
The Cured already made the rounds on the film festival circuit but will be available in select teachers and on Video on Demand on February 23, 2018.
