Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to premiere in theaters on December 15, but that’s not all for writer-director Rian Johnson. Disney’s Lucasfilm has announced that Johnson will helm a brand new Star Wars Trilogy, the first of which he is set to write and direct, with Ram Bergman as the movie producer.
The new trilogy is set to feature new characters from “a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had high praise for Johnson, stating that he is a “creative force,” and that “watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of [her] career.”
Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman both stated that they “had the time of [their] lives” working on The Last Jedi.
Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.
Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases in theaters on December 15.
Editor’s Note: Disney sure knows how to milk a franchise not originally owned by them. First Marvel, now Star Wars. Hell, Disney tried to milk Power Rangers before they tried (unsuccessfully, on four different occasions) to kill it. I may not be the biggest fan, however, I must say, the recent successes of the previous movies do justify this from a financial standpoint, brand oversaturation notwithstanding. If you’re a fan, you should be deservedly overjoyed, and even if you’re not a fan, you should still be happy that Star Wars is getting that shine 40 years after its initial release.
