Following the disappointment of Mass Effect Andromeda, EA has moved the team (BioWare Montreal) around to other games. The series has been put on ice until further notice and no word on the pending DLC.
Some members of Bioware Montreal will be moved to EA Motive to work on the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II. Other members of the team will continue work on Andromeda‘s multiplayer content and Bioware’s unnanounced new IP.
This doesn’t mean that Mass Effect is finished. EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson responded to some of the controversy surrounding Andromeda during an earnings call this week. He says that while EA would have liked to see higher review scores, they are overall happy with Bioware’s work. Reviews were mixed, but he notes there were still over 100 reviews that scored the game at 8 or higher. He also states that the team is continuing to support Mass Effect‘s multiplayer with new content.
During the same call, Wilson also revealed that Bioware’s new IP is delayed to April 2018 or later. They have not revealed the name of their new IP, and Wilson says the delay is not related to Andromeda.
It would seem the future of Mass Effect is uncertain. While Wilson’s comments suggest that EA still sees value in the Mass Effect franchise, they likely need to reevaluate their plans for the series going forward.
