Overwatch A Possibility On Nintendo Switch

By Todd BlackMarch 15, 2017
Overwatch

When the Nintendo Switch was revealed to the world via a “commercial”, Nintendo was quick to reveal some big name partners were on board to make games for their consoles, including some names that have never been on a Nintendo platform before like TellTale Games and Bethesda. This support got players wondering, “Who could join up next? What games could go portable?” One of the most popular answers….was Overwatch.

Now, yes, Blizzard was not on that list of 3rd party developers but doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. In fact, Blizzard is apparently open to the option, at least in potential, for Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan said this:

“Getting Overwatch on the Switch is very challenging for us,” he said in a Reddit Ask Me Anything. “But we’re always open minded about exploring possible platforms.”

The “challenging” part is no doubt the fact that it would take dedicated servers to run Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch, which some MMORPG and MOBA developers refuse to do for consoles, thus why they remain on PC. However, given that the Nintendo Switch has already sold 1.5 million consoles, with that number to grow with each passing week, and a large group of players asking for it to be on Switch, that hesitation may not last. It’s all up to Blizzard now.
