Warner Brothers Seeks Attack on Titan License

Attack on Titan

It was reported by Deadline Magazine that Warner Bros. is looking to acquire licensing rights to Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan franchise. Warner Bros. has expressed interest in creating two live-action movies based on the franchise.  If given the green light, they would be western adaptations of the Japanese versions of the live-action films.

Warner Bros. already has a live-action anime adaptation in the works, though.  They are working to create a movie based on the highly popular and classic anime Akira.  If they acquire the Attack on Titan license, production would being after the completion of the Akira adaptation.

So far, David Heyman, who produced Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, stated that he would be on board to produce the Attack on Titan live-action adaptations.

Both films debuted in 2015 on August 1 and September 19, respectively. The first film earned the equivalent of $5 million while the second only earned around $2.75 million. FUNimation holds the licensing rights to the movies and has since released both in North America.

Isayama’s Attack on Titan manga is currently publishing in Japan and debuted in 2009. Kodansha holds the license for North American distribution and has a partnership with Crunchyroll to release the chapters digitally. Since then, a television anime series adapted up to the female titan arc with a second season slated for this April. Three animated movies were produced to recap the first season’s 25 episodes and a spinoff called Attack on Titan: Junior High aired last year.
