For the past week and a half, there have been rumblings that Sony may be working on a Spider-Man title for the Playstation 4. It began with Nerdleaks, the folks who were recently responsible for exposing concept art for God of War 4, making the claim on their twitter. Their source had been the CV and Instagram of stuntman Stephen Oyoung, who has subsequently removed these materials from his public accounts. His CV included an “Untitled Spiderman PS4 Project” for Blur Studios, famous for their high-profile trailers (see below). For Nerdleaks and cynical gamers, this only served as further evidence if not confirmation.
Things only began to heat up more when PSU wrote that Amazon had temporarily listed an upcoming PS4 remaster of Sucker Punch’s original Infamous. According to the box art, they said, it would include a demo for the rumored Spider-Man title. Of course, as others have pointed out, the lack of evidence and unconventional nature of the story is suspicious.
As you can see, there is a pretty clear Spider-Man logo featured in the little sticker-circle on the left hand side. This game is also supposed to come out on August 10th…that’s a Wednesday. Regardless, excited fans have taken this to mean that Sucker-Punch will be developing the rumored game. It’s what everybody wanted, right? Well, that’s just another reason this all seems dubious.
There was even a nice little tweet sent by Shuhei Yoshida earlier today poking fun at the matter:

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t so subtle. I suppose my point is, doesn’t this seem to add up a little too perfectly to be true? This is the game that everyone wanted from Sucker-Punch, but if it was indeed happening, would Mr. Yoshida even dare to make those kinds of jokes? He has always been tight-lipped about upcoming projects that have yet to be revealed, and I don’t see him ending that trend to post a picture of Spider-Man ramen.
A Spider-Man project may very well be in the works. But the rest seems like Hype Train nonsense.
