While Nintendo has stated over and over that the upcoming “NX” system will not impact anything in regards to the Wii U, it looks like that may not be true. It seems that Nintendo is halting Wii U production the near future. Looks like that original statement from Nintendo isn’t holding any water, with this news being released.
1) The Nikkei just reports Nintendo will stop producing Wii U within 2016. It doesn't say they will necessarily start selling NX in 2016.

The Nikkei report goes on to cite the reason for this is due to poorly selling software and an overall lack of interest in the hardware.
Now while I’m sure Nintendo has more than enough Wii U’s that are likely taking up warehouse space, this also means that the first console to kick off this generation days are numbered. No matter how you look at it, it looks like the Wii U is going to take its final bow this year, hardware-wise at the very least. There is no mention if this will affect any Wii U software or any upcoming titles.
