Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of The Anime Pulse!
The fall season has about four weeks left as of the time of this writing and it’s time to start gearing up for the 2015-2016 Winter Anime Season! This year looks to be somewhat promising as some of the biggest shows from 2015 will be getting their second seasons, but there are a few others catching my eye as well! As in the past with these kind of columns, I am only detailing the shows that I will be watching, personally. Keep in mind that I also do not read the source material unless the anime has me extremely interested. If I do glance over something that you’ve read the source for and you think it’s something that I should be watching, then feel free to let me know!
Durarara!!x2 Ketsu
The third and final cours in the second season of Durarara!! Although I haven’t read the source material fully, I do actually know what happens thanks to me spelunking around a Wikia page for the series. I will refrain from saying anything to avoid spoilers, but there is a certain interaction that I cannot wait to see go down in the anime. It’ll be interesting, nevertheless! I will say, though, that this has been one of my favorite series so far and I can’t wait to see how they wrap this up!
GATE Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri – Enryuu-hen
The second season of GATE of the same title minus the Enryuu-hen part. I loved the first season and if you missed it, it’s about a gate that opens in Japan and a medieval army invades. Japan retaliates by sending their defense force across the gate to the opposing side. Once there, they try to establish a diplomatic relationship with their people and a crossover of reality and fantasy ensues. It was more interesting than I thought it would be and I’m really looking forward the second season, plus it’s just odd to watch black hawk helicopters annihilate people with swords and shields. Okay, it’s not odd… it’s actually damn hilarious! Does that make me a bad person for thinking that way?
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
Also known as Assassination Classroom! The second season will start on January 7, 2016 and will continue the misadventures of E Class trying to get their grades up with the help of their teacher… who just happens to be an Earth-born alien looking to destroy the planet. He already did it to the moon, so why not take out the Earth as well? The kids try to assassinate him, but he’s a bit tougher than he lets on. This is a comedy through and through and the first season left a lot of questions unanswered. Can’t wait to see what they do here in the second season, especially after how the first season ended! Scary Nagisa is scary!
That does it for the sequels. There are a few new shows starting up that have caught my eye as well!
Ajin
Apparently this is getting the Broken Blade (or Break Blade if you prefer the alternate title) treatment. There were several movies produced under the same name and now those movies are being retold through a television anime series. The only difference between Broken Blade and Ajin is I saw the Broken Blade movies and skipped the anime. I haven’t seen any of the Ajin movies so I’m going to take this opportunity to check it out. Ajin is about immortals living among humans. One day, a high school student is killed along the way home and is revived as an Ajin. Now he has a price on his head. Some people have given the movies pretty good reviews and the description piqued my interest so I added it to the list of shows to check out next season.
Dimension W
I actually read a little bit of the manga when this series made its debut, but at that time, I was reading a LOT of different mangas and it got lost in the shuffle. I got lazy and didn’t want to take the time to catch up on it so I ended up dropping it. I know, I know… shame on me, right? When I saw this series received an anime, I figured it was a good way to catch up on what I had been missing out on. In this one, the world’s energy problems are solved with the invention of COILS (Cross Dimension Electric Field Inductors… and no, it’s not an acronym so don’t try and say CDEFI DOESN’T SPELL COILS.) These coils extract energy from a seemingly infinite source called the W Dimension .. a fourth plane that exists alongside the X, Y, and Z Dimensions. There are some who don’t agree with the use of coils… Kyouma is one of those people.
Hei to Gensou no Grimgar
It’s another Sword Art Online-style anime, but I love RPGs and I’m a sucker for anime in the same frame. I’m hoping that this one offers up something good, though as SAO had its good moments and its bad ones. Log Horizon I just couldn’t get into… Rokka no Yuusha had some pretty weak points as well and.. well.. just about every anime I’ve seen in this genre was hit or miss. Accel World was the only real decent one I’ve seen unless I’m blatantly forgetting one that I’ve watched. In this one Haruhito is the protagonist.. he wakes up in the world of Grimgar where it’s a game-like world. He must form a party to survive, blah blah blah, we’ve seen this before. I’m just holding out hope for something unique or at least enjoyable here.
That’s about all that interested me for the next season. There are six shows in total that I will be picking up. Of course, I will continue watching Fairy Tail.. especially since the Fairy Tail Zero side story is going to be animated in January. I REALLY loved that side story and can’t wait to see it animated! I also have World Trigger, Utawarerumono, and Naruto Shipuuden (IF it ever comes out of fillers…) to watch as well, bringing my watching total to 10 shows next season.
That should keep me busy.
You can check out all of the other shows airing this season by clicking the image below. Maybe there is something that will pique your interest that I didn’t cover.
Be that as it may, that’s going to do it for me this week. If you would like to drop me a line with any comments, feel free to do so by sending them on over to joshpiedra@theouterhaven.net. Also if you feel inclined to do so, consider following me on Twitter @PulseIn.
Until next time,
