A recent job posting suggests that Blizzard may be getting ready to remaster, or at the very least bring big updates, to some of their most beloved titles. In particular, the page cites StarCraft, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3. According to the post, “We’re (Blizzard) restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.”
The responsibilities of the position include, interestingly, making the games “look as good as they play” and tailoring “features new and old.” Blizzard also implies a massive effort to combat hacking that has plagued the older titles and sweeping for any bugs and crashes.
The post was listed under a new section, “Classic Games,” as opposed to “Unannounced Projects.” This might suggest that Blizzard intends to dig even deeper into their back catalog in the future.
Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction devastated my childhood, becoming something of a religion among my friends and I. The thought that such titles could return with all of the benefits of the modern age is both thrilling and terrifying. Even just an updated version might hook me again.
Here is to hoping, and to dreading.
