After the conclusion of past Doctor Who spinoffs The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood (both of which ended in 2011), Doctor Who has been without a spinoff show for around 4 years now.
A new spinoff, Class has just been announced for BBC Three. Just as the previous spinoffs had a direct connection to the Doctor in some way with Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) being a companion to the 3rd and 4th Doctor and Torchwood being headed by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) who encountered the 10th and 11th reincarnations of the Doctor.
Class will be aimed toward young adults, taking place at Coal Hill School where the Doctor has deep ties. His granddaughter Susan (Carole Ann Ford), who was a student there made her appearance along with the 1st Doctor (William Hartnell) in the very first episode back in 1963. They were joined in their adventures by Coal Hill teachers Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) and Ian (William Russell). Coal Hill School would go on to play a part throughout the history of Doctor Who with several adventures taking place there. Current companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) is an English teacher at Coal Hill when she’s not running around saving the world (though this will be her last season on Doctor Who and has been confirmed not be appearing in the Class spinoff).
Class will be written by Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls) and current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is on as an Executive Producer. Class will air in 2016.
