Just when you thought Secret Wars couldn’t get any bigger, several new tie-ins have been added. Years of Future Past, Squadron Sinister, Giant-Size Little Marvel: AvX, Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps, and Mrs. Deadpool and the Howling Commandos.
Years of Future Past is a re-imagining of the popular Days of Future Past arc that ran in the Uncanny X-Men series. It revolved around Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat and the X-Men trying to prevent a future in which mutants are captured and placed into camps by sentinels. Its popularity also spawned 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past film. While in the original DoFP run, Kitty Pryde transfers back to her timeline (the 1980s), Years of Future Past sees Kitty Pryde deciding to stay in the future (2013). The run will explore Pryde’s challenges in her fight for mutant-kind. Written by Marguerite Bennett and art from Mike Norton.
Squadron Sinister will feature its original four members (Hyperion, Nighthawk, Whizzer, Doctor Spectrum) with the addition of Warrior Woman. The villainous Squadron Sinister team was meant to be representations of rival DC Comics’ Justice League. Hyperion was based on Superman, Nighthawk was Batman, Whizzer (now going by the name Speed Demon) was meant to represent Flash, and Doctor Spectrum was based on Green Lantern. Thought brought in for the Avengers to beat up, members like Hyperion eventually developed a bit of a following. Squadron Sinister will feature the original lineup, but this cast will be much more sinister than their counterparts that made its original appearance. This Squadron Sinister will be ruling a part of Battleworld called Utopolis. They will be pitted against an alternate universe super hero version of the team called Squadron Supreme, also led by a Hyperion. One side will be restrained by a moral code, and one will have none of that responsibility. The story will be written by Marc Guggenheim (an Executive Producer on the CW’s Arrow and Flash!) and drawn by Carlos Pacheco.
Giant-Size Little Marvel: AvX will be a lighthearted take on the Avengers vs X-Men run. Most Marvel fans will recognize Skottie Young’s art, who has provided variant covers for many books featuring baby characters. Young also wrote the one shot A-Babies vs X-Babies when the original AvX run was still fresh. Not much has been announced for the series, but expect adorable artwork and something less series than the other Secret Wars tie-ins. The story will be both written and drawn by Skottie Young (yay!).
Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps will feature Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel)leading a team of non-super powered team of female fighter pilots. The title will see familiar faces of the Banshee Squadron from the “In Pursuit of Flight” arc of Captain Marvel. Written by current Ms. Marvel writer, Kelly Sue DeCornick and Kelly Thompson with art from David Lopez.
Mrs. Deadpool and the Howling Commandos will feature Deadpool’s new wife, Shiklah. The Shiklah we’re familiar with is the Queen of Monster Metrolopis, and the Howling Commandos were a unit originally led by Nick Fury Sr. during World War 2. In this take, Shiklah will be leading a Howling Commandos unit, where the Commandos roster is made up of Marvel’s older monster characters like Man-Thing and N’Kantu (the Living Mummy). This alternate take on the character will also make changes to how she and Deadpool met. Written by Gerry Dugan but no announced artist.
