ULTRA Street Fighter IV…huh.

First, let’s get some perspective going here.

In the 80s, the fighting game genre had taken its first baby steps with Data East’s Karate Champ and Konami’s Yie Ar Kung Fu. Then Capcom showed up with the original Street Fighter, refining on the previous games. (Side Note: Capcom really needs to revisit that game. Too many people discard it.) After that, things were relatively quiet in the genre…until Street Fighter II: The World Warrior came around in 1991. Then, the genre exploded, spawning endless clones and, for a time, reviving the arcade game industry. Things were intense until the release of Street Fighter III: Third Strike, when things started to slow down somewhat for the genre, until it was practically on life support. Sure, titles were still released, but nothing to really bring the genre back into the mainstream.

True to form, however, Capcom changed all of that with Street Fighter IV in 2008. Suddenly, the genre was a force to be reckoned with. Of course, Capcom insisted on tweaking and refining the game, as they are prone to do.

Well, next year, we’ll see the fruits of their labor.

Now, if you’re a fighting game player, or someone who’s been keeping an eye on Capcom, you’re either hyped about this, extremely pissed that they’re up to their old tricks or too cynical and jaded to care. Either way, this is big. I, for one, am wondering how much of an update this will truly be. A good idea would be for Capcom to expand of the story.

But, that’s just me.
